Pensacola Junior College’s volleyball team won the Panhandle Conference Championship Tuesday night, Oct. 13.

The Pirates clinched the title after defeating Gulf Coast Community College in four sets.

“A good night,” PJC coach Pete Pena told the Pensacola News Journal. “We came out and executed and really, really played well the first two sets. Tonight was a night when you knew the effort would be there.”

The win gives the Pirates a bid for the state tournament.

PJC faced Gulf Coast last week with a chance to clinch the title on the line as well. The outcome was different, however, as Gulf Coast defeated PJC and forced Tuesday’s deciding match.

“I think we came back with a tremendous attitude,” Pena said. “Those first two sets we actually dominated them. To their credit, they weren’t going to go down lightly.”

Next up, the Pirates travel to St. John’s River Community College Thursday, Oct. 15, before heading to Jacksonville to take part in the FCCJ Invitational over the weekend.

“We’re going to enjoy ourselves and keep our focus on volleyball,” Pena said. “We made a vow, made a promise that we’re going to get better every single day.”

PJC will host its first-ever Sporting Clay Tournament Saturday,  September 26.   Proceeds from Take Aim for Scholarships will benefit the Universal Scholarship Fund.

The clay shoot takes place at Shoal River Sporting Clays and Shooting Center in Crestview. Registration and a safety meeting will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start at 11:30.   Awards, prizes and a barbecue lunch are part of the event. Individual entries are $100 and corporate teams are $1,000 for one team (four players) and $2,000 (eight players) for two.  There are only 2 team spots (8 shooters) available.  Register today!

There is also a raffle for a Remington 1100 Sporting 12 gauge shotgun.  Tickets are $20.  Please see the attached flyer.

The Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts at Pensacola Junior College starts its 2009-2010 Lyceum series with sculptor Michael Boles.

The exhibit runs Aug. 17 through Oct. 9 at the Visual Arts Gallery.

The reception is 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 27.

Boles is recipient of the 2006-2009 Anna Lamar Switzer Endowed Teaching Chair. The designation rewards an artist/educator in PJC’s Visual Arts department by supporting projects, research and artistic development that result in enhanced personal and professional achievement. Boles teaches sculpture and design.

Boles’ art has been featured in exhibits throughout the Southeast, and he has won numerous awards for his drawing, relief sculpture and free-standing sculptural compositions. The current thrust of his work utilizes digital technology to produce intricate, free-form, metal and stone wall sculpture. Boles’ work is featured in various collections across the country; he is a recent recipient of an Art in State Buildings Award for the state of Florida. His work is published in “A Comprehensive Guide to Outdoor Sculpture in Texas” by Carol Morris Little and listed in the Smithsonian Institution’s Inventory of American Painting and Sculpture.

The Visual Arts Gallery is in Building 15 on the Pensacola campus. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday. Tours are available with prior arrangements. Admission is free.

Pensacola Junior College partners with the Escambia and Santa Rosa county school districts to host College Fair 2009 Sept. 14-15 at its Pensacola and Milton campuses.

For Escambia County students, the fair is 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at the Hartsell Arena, Building 3, Pensacola campus, 1000 College Blvd.

For Santa Rosa County students, the fair is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the L.I.F.E. Fitness Center, Building 4000, Milton campus, 5988 Highway 90.

Both events are free.

College Fair invites about 100 colleges, universities and technical schools from across the nation to participate. The goal is to provide high school juniors and seniors a place to meet representatives from many institutions who can answer questions about admission procedures, registration requirements, tuition and fees, degree programs, scholarships, financial assistance, student life and housing.

Community college students who plan to transfer to universities are encouraged to attend – as well as parents.

WSRE announces the new learning tool KIDS GO! video player is available on its Web site at www.wsre.org/KidsGo.

WSRE’s Web site is giving early elementary school-aged kids across our region more to explore with the launch of an advertising-free, streaming video player offering hundreds of video clips and dozens of full-length episodes. In-video gaming capabilities are also embedded in the popular curriculum-based series. The games foster greater learning comprehension and enhance the digital experience for early elementary school children. Now kids can watch what they want, when they want and play cool games — but don’t tell them it’s educational.

The PBS KIDS GO! video player showcases content from 14 different PBS KIDS GO! broadcast properties primarily serving children ages 6 to 8, an audience with limited age-appropriate media choices.

Alessandro Bailetti, a Pensacola Junior College student who graduated summa cum laude in May, is a recipient of the 2009 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

The Foundation selected 30 students from 485 nominees. The scholarship provides tuition and a stipend beginning fall of 2009. Last year, awards for the first year of study under the scholarship averaged $19,500.

“This is the first time in the 10 years that I have been in the scholarship office that our nominee has been selected,” says PJC coordinator of scholarships Virginia Santoni. “We are very proud of him. This is truly an honor for him and PJC.”

Bailetti, 21, who is working as a peer advisor at PJC this summer, excelled academically at PJC. He is a member of international honors society Phi Theta Kappa; earlier this year, he made the Phi Theta Kappa All-Florida Academic Team. His affiliations include the PJC Student Ambassadors, Engineering Club and Student Government Association.

While attending PJC, Bailetti also demonstrated outstanding achievement in service, leadership and community involvement.

“PJC has changed my life…it has opened many doors” Bailetti says. “I have grown as a person and as a student. PJC provided me a well-rounded education that puts me ahead of the game anywhere I end up going.”

In August, Bailetti heads to Cornell University to major in biology.

The Jack Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation established in 2000 by the estate of Jack Kent Cooke to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education. Cooke, who died in 1997, was a businessman, sportsman and philanthropist who owned, among other diverse holdings, the Washington Redskins football team and the Chrysler Building in New York City.
